Kaybree the lover

Kaybree,

I love how loving you can be! You're getting really good at hugs and kisses. One time you even asked ME for a kiss, which was new and exciting! Hugs and kisses for mom and dad is my favorite part of our bedtime routine. You know it so well that after we pray, we hug and kiss. Sometimes I know you use hugs and kisses to extend your bedtime. You give me a hug and kiss, then Dad gets a hug and kiss and then you run back to me for another hug and kiss and then immediately run to Dad. You know it makes us laugh and we never turn down a chance to love you so yes, it does get you five more minutes of awake time.
I also love it when I'm carrying you somewhere and you hold on real tight. That let's me know you love me and are excited to be with me.
I think I just love feeling you little toddler hands and arms on me when you are not being whiny but just loving. Lately you've decided you like to do my hair. You run up behind me when I'm sitting on the ground and just move it around. It feels good for the most part so I let you.
You've been an amazing big sister to Eisley. I was so afraid because when I first got pregnant you did NOT like babies but you love Eisley. Every time I pick her up, you want to hold her. Every time I say something to her, you say something to her too.

This one makes me laugh. You were holding her, watching TV and then you peak over and see her trying to suck her hand, so you stop sucking your own thumb to move her hand away from her mouth--and then you go back to sucking your thumb. You're very loving but bossy too ;)

Lately I've been giving the two of you baths together. It makes it easier on me. I put the baby tub inside the big tub and unplug it so when I fill up the big tub the baby tub is filled too. Then I set Eisley in the seat of the baby tub and you in the big tub. She loves watching you play in the water. She smiles and coos the whole time you two are in the bath. She just kicks and relaxes in the warm water and you just play with cups and bowls. Sometimes I walk away for a second and come back to find Eisley with bubbles  on her head or a wash cloth covering her belly. She loves it and so do you! It's so sweet.
The first few times I put you in together this would happen. You both end up in the baby tub. I think now Eisley is kicking too much so you don't enjoy being in there with her as much but you still like having her in the tub with you.

Grief

Grief is such a weird thing. Why does a death have to hurt even 16 years after it happened? Why does it hurt at all if it's such a part of life? And when it does hurt it just feels silly. I can't shut my life down every time it hits. Life doesn't work like that. It never has.  Life has continued in the past 16 years. It's completely different now. It's a life she never experienced. It's a life she wasn't a part of (to no fault of her own!) So why does it still hurt? And when it does hurt why does it hit like a ton of bricks? Why can't I stop the tears from coming?  How are you supposed to act when someone is grieving? I don't know, and that's why I hide it from my husband and kids. Because they can't understand. They never knew her. They don't know this grief. I don't want any pity.  So I write because writing works. It helps to vent, even though no one will read it. I did dream of her last night. It was Michelle Day, the annual day ...

What do you want out of this?

I think when we started fostering we were often asked what we wanted. What was our intention? We didn’t want to grow our family. We didn’t have self improvement in mind (although that definitely happened.) For us, we felt like we had a great life and enough of it to share. We just wanted to love someone. I think the only healthy mindset to have while fostering is being prepared to love someone—no matter what. That was our biggest take away. We learned what truly, honestly unconditional love was.  What I’m most proud of is the fact that that love has endured. J has been coming around pretty often lately. The day before his 21st birthday he allowed us to take him out to celebrate. This past weekend he brought his girlfriend over and they stayed and played games after dinner. He’s still not “successful.” He didn’t finish high school. He’s not excelling at work. His current landlord is kicking him out at the end of the month and with his work schedule… his future housing situation does...
